Aromatherapy and Emotional Healing

by Robyn Heirtzler

There is an art to physical and emotional healing. The art provides stimulation to the immune system and various emotions through scent. The art is commonly referred to as aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is the use of naturally distilled, essential oils to promote health and well-being to the mind and body. Used correctly, essential oils can restore balance and harmony, even in those who have experienced traumatic events in their pasts.

Essential oils can directly impact emotional states such as stress, anxiety, sadness and tension.

When used with an essential oil diffuser, the tiny molecules are dispersed into the air where they are taken into the body with each breath. These healing breaths stimulate the brain to release chemicals that can change physical, emotional and mental states.

Certain aromas may activate the pituitary gland, which produces hormones that can affect the physical body as well as emotions, allowing the body to heal itself.

Not all essential oil aromas produce the same reaction in all people. The impressions of each scent are influenced by personal taste and backgrounds. However, it is certainly a pleasing way to begin the emotional healing process.

It is a healing process that could help shift focus from negative emotional experiences and patterns to more positive feelings and actions.

Lavender is often used to help with hysteria, panic, shock, stress, tension, and anxiety; all of which are common after emotional trauma. Rose is known for its soothing scent and is often used for tension, shock, stress, sadness, grief and anxiety. Chamomile is another soothing essential oil that helps to reduce stress, calm and heal.

The above mentioned essential oils help alleviate headache and pain, create spiritual healing and encourage unconditional love. They are often used in conjunction with meditation.

Some of the top essential oils being used today are soothing oils, whether to heal emotionally from past traumas or to experience relief from day-to-day stress, they are worth taking a look at.

Eucalyptus helps boost the immune system and relieve muscle tension. Ylang ylang can also reduce muscle tension but is also useful as an antidepressant. Geranium is another powerful antidepressant. It is also used for relaxation and to uplift.

In addition to these soothing oils, Clary sage is helpful for relaxation and insomnia, a problem many face when dealing with emotional disturbance.

While many of the essential oils are pleasant to smell, others are pungent or may have a “medical” smell to them, but they all have a purpose. Combinations of oils are also available for healing, relaxing and focus. These are called synergies.

Essential oils can be used directly on the skin or diffused to create a subtle, constantly healing fragrance. Aromatherpy diffusers or nebulizing diffusers come in a variety of styles. While some diffuse concentrated oils, others use a combination of oil and water in a humidifier-type diffuser.

All provide the healing breaths that can stimulate the brain to begin healing itself naturally.

Aromatherapy is a natural healing therapy that can be used in conjunction with many other forms of health care and counseling.
